Random Name Picker – Pick a Winner

Picking a winner fairly is harder than it looks. Slips of paper get lost, hat draws get questioned, and asking for a volunteer is never truly random. Our random name picker settles it in seconds: paste your list of names, click the button, and the tool draws one at random using your browser’s built-in cryptographic random number generator. Switch on no-repeat mode and it keeps drawing fresh names until the whole list is used — perfect for lucky draws, classroom turns, chore rotations, and team selections.

Teachers use it to call on students without accusations of favouritism, event hosts use it for door-prize draws, and managers use it to assign on-call rotations or divide people into teams. Because every draw is independent and unbiased, the results are accepted in a way that hand-picked or ‘eenie-meenie’ selections never are.

The whole thing runs locally in your browser: your names are never uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone else, which matters when the list contains students, employees, or customers. There is no sign-up, no limit on draws, and no cost — just paste, pick, and move on with the event.

How it works

Every draw starts with your list, split into individual names at each line break and cleaned of empty lines. The tool then asks your browser’s cryptographic random number generator for a random position in the list and returns the name sitting there. Because the randomness comes from the operating system’s entropy pool rather than a simple formula, the result is unpredictable and unbiased — no name is favoured, including the first and last.

No-repeat mode adds one refinement: after a name is drawn, it is removed from the working pool, so the same person cannot be picked twice in a row. The original list you typed stays untouched, and the reset button restores the full pool instantly for a fresh round. In repeat-allowed mode, the pool is refilled from your original list before every draw.

Nothing about the process leaves your device. There is no server-side draw to audit because there is no server involved at all — the fairness comes from the quality of the random source, which is the same class of generator used for security-sensitive work in browsers.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste or type your list of names, one per line, into the text box.
  2. Tick no-repeat mode if each name should be drawn only once.
  3. Click Pick to draw a random name.
  4. Keep clicking to draw more names from the remaining pool.
  5. Click Reset when you want to restore the full list and start over.

Practical tips

  • Put one name per line and remove blank lines first — empty lines cannot win, but they clutter the list.
  • For team splits, use no-repeat mode and draw alternately for each team; it is faster and fairer than arguing.
  • Screenshot or note down each winner as you go, since closing the tab wipes the list completely.
  • Avoid lists with duplicate names unless duplicates are intentional — 'Rahul' twice means Rahul has double the chance.
  • For prize draws with real stakes, check local contest rules first; this tool is for casual use, not regulated lotteries.

Frequently asked questions

Is the draw truly random?

It uses your browser's built-in cryptographically secure random number generator — more than fair enough for giveaways, classrooms, and team picks. It is not a certified lottery system, so for draws with significant money or legal stakes, use a witnessed process instead. For classroom picks, raffles, and team draws, this level of fairness is more than sufficient — disputes about rigged draws simply disappear.

How does no-repeat mode work?

Each drawn name is removed from the pool, so nobody can win twice. Once every name has been drawn, the tool tells you the list is exhausted. Click reset to restore the full list and start a fresh round. This makes it ideal for dealing out teams or running multi-round lucky draws where everyone should win at most once.

Are my names uploaded anywhere?

No. The list never leaves your browser — there is no server, no account, and no storage of any kind. When you close the tab, the names are gone for good, which makes it safe for lists of students, employees, or customers where privacy matters. Even the page owner cannot see your list, because there is no transmission step at all — privacy here comes from architecture, not policy.

Can I use it for a business giveaway?

For small informal giveaways it works well. But prize giveaways often have legal requirements — eligibility rules, winner announcements, sometimes permits. Check the rules in your state or country before running a public contest with real prizes. When prizes have real value, document your process: save the participant list and note the draw time, so winners and onlookers trust the result.

How many names can I add?

Hundreds of names work fine — the draw itself takes a fraction of a second. Very long lists (thousands) may be awkward to paste, but the picker handles them. For huge lists, consider trimming duplicates first. For huge lists, just make sure there are no accidental duplicates first — a name appearing twice gets double the chance.

What happens when the list runs out?

In no-repeat mode, drawing stops when the pool is empty and the tool shows that everyone has been picked. Click reset to refill the list. In repeat mode, it simply keeps drawing from the full list forever. In repeat mode, it simply keeps drawing from the full list indefinitely, so the fun never has to stop.

Note: Designed for casual draws, classrooms, and team picks — not a certified system for regulated lotteries or high-stakes prize draws. Check local rules before running public contests with prizes.
